“രണ്ടാംലോകമഹായുദ്ധാനന്തരം ബര്‍മ്മയില്‍ നിന്നും ഇറക്കുമതി ചെയ്ത നെല്ലിലൂടെയാവണം Limnocharis Flava എന്ന ജലസസ്യത്തിന്റെ വിത്തുകള്‍ കേരളത്തിലെ പാടശേഖരങ്ങളിലെത്തുന്നത്. ഇത്തരം വിവിധ സസ്യങ്ങള്‍ കേരളത്തിലെ ജലാശയങ്ങളുടെ നിലനില്‍പിനെ തന്നെ അപകടത്തിലാക്കിയിരിക്കുകയാണ്. കുളവാഴ (Icchronia), ആഫ്രിക്കന്‍ പായല്‍ (Salvinia) എന്നിവ ഇത്തരം കളകളാണ്. ജലാശയങ്ങളുടെ ഉപരിതലത്തില്‍ വ്യാപിക്കുന്ന ഇവ സൂര്യപ്രകാശത്തെ തടയുകയും അതോടെ ജലസസ്യങ്ങളുടെയും സൂക്ഷമ ആല്‍ഗകളുടെയും (Micro Algae) പ്രകാശസംശ്ളേഷണത്തെ തടസ്സപ്പെടുത്തുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു. ഇത് ജലത്തിലെ ഓക്സിജന്റെ അളവ് ക്രമാതീതമായി കുറയ്ക്കുകയും മറ്റു ജലജീവികളുടെയും സസ്യങ്ങളുടെയും നിലനില്‍പിനെ ബാധിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു.”
കേരളത്തിലെ ഗ്രാമപ്രദേശങ്ങളിലും വനങ്ങളിലും അതിവേഗം പടര്‍ന്നു പിടിച്ചതിനാലാണ് Chromolaena odorata എന്ന തെക്കന്‍ അമേരിക്കന്‍ സസ്യം കമ്മുണിസ്റ്റുപച്ച എന്നറിയപ്പെടുന്നത്. ഈ പേരിനെ സാധൂകരിക്കുന്ന മറ്റൊരു പ്രത്യേകത കൂടി ഈ ചെടിക്കുണ്ട്. ഇതിന്റെ വേരില്‍ നിന്നും പുറത്തു വരുന്ന വിഷമയമായ ചില ജൈവ രാസസംയുക്തങ്ങള്‍ ആ പരിസരത്തുള്ള മറ്റു ചെടികളെ നശിപ്പിക്കുന്നു. (Allelopathic effect) അങ്ങനെ സ്വാഭാവിക ജൈവ വൈവിധ്യത്തെ തകര്‍ത്ത് ഒറ്റചെടിയുടെ വലിയ കാടായി മാറുന്നു.
സ്വാഭാവിക ജൈവ വൈവിധ്യത്തിന് ഏറ്റവും വലിയ രണ്ടാമത്തെ ഭീഷണിയായി IUCN, FAO തുടങ്ങിയ സംഘടനകള്‍ പരിഗണിക്കുന്നത് ഇത്തരം കളകളെ (Weeds) ആണ്. ആവാസ വ്യവസ്ഥയുടെ നാശമാണ് ഒന്നാമത്തെ ഭീഷണി. ഒരു പ്രത്യേക ആവാസവ്യവസ്ഥയില്‍ ആവശ്യമില്ലാത്ത(Unwanted) ചെടിയെ ആണ് കളയായി പരിഗണിക്കുന്നത്. ആകസ്മികമായോ അല്ലാതെയോ ഒരു പ്രദേശത്ത് എത്തിപ്പെടുന്ന കളകള്‍ അവിടുത്തെ സ്വാഭാവിക സസ്യജാലങ്ങളെ (Natural vegetation) നശിപ്പിച്ച് അവിടെ സ്ഥാപിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. ഇറക്കുമതി ചെയ്യപ്പെടുന്ന ധാന്യങ്ങളിലൂടെയും യാത്രക്കിടയിലും അലങ്കാര സസ്യങ്ങളായും ഒക്കെ ഇത്തരം സസ്യങ്ങല്‍ എത്തിപ്പെടാം.
അതിസമ്പന്നമായ ജൈവ വൈവിധ്യത്താല്‍ അനുഗ്രഹീതമാണ് പശ്ചിമഘട്ട (Westren Ghats) മേഖലയിലുള്‍പ്പെടുന്ന കേരളത്തിലെ വനങ്ങളും വനേതര പ്രദേശങ്ങളും ജലാശയങ്ങളും. കളകളുടെ അമിതമായ വ്യാപനം ഈ ജൈവ വൈവിധ്യം നേരിടുന്ന ഏറ്റവും വലിയ ഭീഷണികളിലൊന്നാണ്. നിരന്തരമായ കുടിയേറ്റങ്ങളും അതിനോടനുബന്ധിച്ചുള്ള പ്രകൃതി വിഭവങ്ങളുടെ നശീകരണവും വനസമ്പത്തിനെ ഇല്ലാതാക്കികൊണ്ടിരിക്കുമ്പോള്‍ ടൂറിസവും അനധികൃത കൈയ്യേറ്റവും നികത്തലുകളും ഇതേ വിധി തന്നെ ജലാശയങ്ങള്‍ക്കും നല്‍കുന്നു. യഥാര്‍ത്ഥത്തില്‍ ഇത്തരം പ്രവര്‍ത്തനങ്ങളിലൂടെ സ്വാഭാവിക ജൈവ വൈവിധ്യം നശിച്ച പ്രദേശങ്ങളിലാണ് കളകള്‍ ആദ്യമായി വളര്‍ന്നു തുടങ്ങുന്നത്. പിന്നീട് പരിസര പ്രദേശങ്ങളിലേക്കും വ്യാപിക്കുന്നു. ഉദാഹരണമായി വലിയ മരങ്ങല്‍ മുറിച്ച് മാറ്റുമ്പോഴുണ്ടാവുന്ന തെളിഞ്ഞ പ്രദേശങ്ങളില്‍ ലഭ്യമാകുന്ന അമിതമായ സൂര്യപ്രകാശം കളകളുടെ വളര്‍ച്ചയെയും വ്യാപനത്തെയും സഹായിക്കുന്നു. അതുപോലെ തന്നെ ഒഴുക്കു നിലച്ച ജലാശയങ്ങളില്‍ അടിഞ്ഞുകൂടുന്ന പോഷകങ്ങള്‍ ജലത്തിലുണ്ടാകുന്ന കളകളുടെ വ്യാപനത്തിനും സഹായിക്കുന്നു.
