    FROM A CRADLE OF THORNS

    Utharakalam Admin

Vinu’s works refuse to accept the basic assumptions inherent in such posturing and attempts to begin its real work in the fuzzy areas in  the  aporias of ‘culture ‘.  The closing off of entire cultures towards what falls outside of the hegemonic , the demonization  of ‘other’ peoples and cultures, is a constant theme in Vinu’s paintings. While  difference is marked by contempt and suspicion in the  common sense of socially dominant groups, attempting to paralyze dissent, this artist refuses to partake in the diatribes of the ‘cultured’ and makes out a case to the contrary, aided by the subversive potentials of Ambedkar vis a vis Indian

Shoot us, but we will not give up

Ajmal khan             ___________________________ All that we done is, we elected you. and this is not new to us either, We do it all the times. We have never demanded for anything yet. Neither we complained, nor protest. My forefathers made their life here, they were happy though they ate once or twice a day. Then I came, I fish here, I dream on the shores. and tomorrow my son will come and their sons. We lived our lives with what we had, we were happy here. This is for our children, this is for our women, this for our generations to come and this is for the every living organism here. We will not go away,  we will not give up, kill us but we will not give

BENOY P.J “So I am speaking with a broken tongue, one with a gap between its pieces; broken perhaps for numerous reasons. I am connecting this area with my thoughtful, fragile images. This is the only way that I can escape the gap that is ‘our time’.” - Zakkir Hussain, Letter to a friend. “The conditions of life are neither in the organism nor in the outer environment, but in both at once, indeed if we absolutely isolate a body in our thought, we annihilate it in so doing; and if, on the contrary, we multiply its relations with the outer world, we multiply its properties.” -Claude Bernard; ‘Introduction à la mēdecine experimentale.’(1865) Zakkir Hussain’s works start off with a notion of art that

Ramkinkar Baij: A Chronicle of Redemption Foretold

Santhosh S "This history unfolds the ways through which the cultural elite in India have appropriated the material and cultural production of the subalterns while denying both subaltern’s contributions and elite’s own history of appropriation, thus reinforcing their own sense of self and glorifying their own cultural violence. I would argue in this paper that against the master narratives of modernism Ramkinkar has tactically deployed a minor linguistic idiom which has written the first ‘counter-history’ of mainstream modernism and paved the way for many modernisms in Indian art." The life and works of Ramkinkar Baij narrate another dimension of the story of the history of modernism in India. It is due to the fact that

Jagdish Chandra   Raju uses and explores popular visual material as reference as well as citation in his painting and drawings. In some of his works presence of bridge, fighter plane, and Paralympics, skates, football are example of that, he does not use photographs of these or visual material as it is but he uses to create an ambiguity through devise of simultaneous juxtaposition to present and represent his experience and understanding on them. Born and raised in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand, Raju Prabhu Patel (1975) moved after his Senior Secondary Examination to Faculty of Fine Arts, Baroda to pursue his interest in the field of painting. Although it is a coincidence he being a migrant from Gujrat goes back to Vadodara

Fault lines in Johny ML‘s open article addressing Geeta Kapur

Sree Krishnan "In the recent skirmish, an encounter, stood out. A brave and essentially young art critic turned his guns against the ‘bharath matha’ of Indian art. If it sounds a slander let it be ‘Indira Gandi ‘of Indian art. The critic being essentially young the guns turned out to be toy guns. The critique was reduced to ‘in praise of Geeta Kapur’. " Amoeba is significantly small. But as a living organism which grows by splitting, the spell it casts presently on Indian art scenario is overwhelming. The heavy art trafficking happening in media/new media suggests an imminent split. But then is the art world a primitive organism to counterfeit this binary split-grow phenomenon? The answer lies in how contemporary art

SHADOWS IN A BROKEN MIRROR: NARCISSISM, VIOLENCE AND THE NEW LEXICON

    Utharakalam Admin

BENOY P.J   Tree tuning fork, the ear resting on the trunk of a tree to hear its years of growth, to hear the noise of the wind that runs in the branches, in the trunk, in the roots down into the earth. Resting the ear and striking the trunk of a tree. Each species of tree a sound, each day of the tree a different sound, a sound of summer, a sound of autumn, every season a sound, every day a sound depending on the heat, the cold, the dryness, the water in the air, Propogation of the sound, propagation of the wood, roundness of the sound, roundness of the tree. On the fingertips the drawing of the sound. -from the writings of Giuseppe Penone   From his early works during the Santiniketan days,
